Mild Summer = Tomatoes in August
This garden is an all afternoon-sun garden. It starts getting sun at 11:00 am, and continues to get full sun until 7:00 – 7:30. The hot summers of the last few years combined with the fusarium in the soil pretty much has meant that everything is done by August. Going into August this year, I still have tons of green tomatoes on the plants! These pics are just a few of the plants on July 31st:
These gems are just about ready:
I started the season with 18 plants. About 8 of them took a while to get going, and 3 of those grew very little and still have not gotten large enough to flower until last week! Very strange. As of now, 3 of the tomato plants have already succumbed to fusarium and a fourth is pretty close – but all of these produced good quantity and quality tomatoes before they finished.
Your garden gets about the same amount of sun as mine! Green tomato chutney is always a good way to use any green tomatoes at the end of the season. My plants outside have yet to start growing any tomatoes, so undoubtedly that’s what I’ll be making this autumn, if indeed I get any tomatoes at all.
Hi silverbells2012, I am sorry to hear that you haven’t gotten any tomatoes yet you get tons of sun – I am guessing you must be farther north than I am and get later harvests. Hang in there, hopefully you’ll get some red ones! I hope that your garden is doing well otherwise!
I did put my tomatoes later this year and they were weaker plants as I sowed the seeds later as well. That said, they are starting to develop fruit now, thank goodness.
Hi silverbells2012, I hope that it has all worked out and that you have gotten some glorious tomatoes in this harvest season!
Thank you! They are growing, albeit still green, so as long as I have enough to make some chutney to last through the winter, I’ll be happy 🙂
Your tomato cages really stood up well
Hi atomatogrowsinqueens, yes they did – these are the largest tomato cages one can buy. It is possible to make larger ones from garden fencing, but I just bought the pre-made cages. They have done very well for me.
