Little Finger Eggplant

August 9, 2012

The Little Finger eggplants are doing pretty well, these pics are from a week ago:

They took a really long time to flower and then got a ton of flowers all at once. I did have to pick off flea beetles almost daily, but they still didn’t seem to be as bad this year as they have been in the past.

Bell Peppers

July 31, 2012

Well they’re small, but I am happy to have some! This is the yield from 4 plants, I still have 3 left on the plants. Not a very high yield; I am still trying to figure out how to grow bell peppers.

More Tomato Pickins

July 17, 2012

The latest round of tomato harvests… it didn’t rain here for almost a month, and now for the past 2 weeks it’s been raining every day, so the tomatoes are getting lots of splits. No problem, it just means that they need to be picked and eaten faster! Even though these are slicing tomatoes, I cooked up a large pot with the usual italian splices, + onions and bell pepper = YUM! Threw some roasted chicken in there and got a really garlicy chicken stew… simply fantastic.

Ripe Tomatoes!

July 11, 2012

Woot finally getting some ripe tomatoes. These are most of the pickins from the last few days:

3 varieties: Tye Dye, Big Boy, and Cherokee Purple… most of the Cherokee Purples have yet to ripen, but they are the best, got a whole loaf of good bread waiting for sandwiches! Still have lots of green ones ready to mature!

Bell Peppers are on the way

July 5, 2012

The bell peppers are looking pretty good so far:

Something (probably earwigs) has been eating the pepper plant leaves like they are a delicacy, perhaps it’s time to put out more earwig traps!

Didn’t I Have a Post Last Year Titled “Waiting Patiently For Ripe Tomatoes?”

July 5, 2012

Yes, I did, and of course it can apply to this year as well. I guess this can be a recurring theme for the beginning of July.

The tomato plants have just survived 5 days of over 100 degrees (with the help of huge amounts of water at the end of the day!). Last evening I sat in the yard with a wonderful cocktail, and counted the number of green tomatoes from my field of view – I stopped counting when I reached 50. Looking forward to ripe tomatoes! I think I am going to try gazpacho this year.

Cucumber Plot July 5 2012

July 5, 2012

I have 4 cucumber plants this year, 1 Marketmore and 3 burpless hybrid. I would have preferred 4 Marketmore, but my seedlings had issues, which resulted in the need to buy some plants – from the big box store that had no variety.
